Sikivu’s new song, “Girl Builds a World” , was specifically composed for the soundtrack of her short film Alpha Centauri, which amplifies the disproportionate impact of grooming and trafficking on Black girls, vis-a-vis the experiences of a Black girl foster youth and aspiring aerospace engineer in her senior year of high school. The song unpacks the racial and gender inequities that Black women have historically experienced in the field of American scientific exploration and discovery, while shouting out African American female STEM pioneers such as Dorothy Vaughn, Dr. Shirley Jackson, Katherine Johnson and Dr. Mae Carol Jemison. Spoken word artist Brianna Simone Parnell contributed rap verses to the track, which was produced by Mauricio “Maurock” Alvarez, with mastering assistance from artist-musician Jeff Kelley.
