For the past decade, white folks in Los Angeles who have been “priced out” of predominantly white enclaves on the Westside and San Fernando Valley have descended on Black neighborhoods, fueling gentrification, displacement, and racial discord. Many of these neighborhoods were upended by white flight generations prior. My new release (and eighth single), “40 Acres 40 Stories” explores the roots of this dynamic vis-a-vis the legacy of the 1919 Red Summer, white flight in reverse and the theft of Black generational wealth, shouting out historical sites of anti-Black terrorism in the communities of Wilmington, North Carolina, Elaine, Arkansas, and Rosewood, Florida.
